In this special event presented by the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS:ACRI) in partnership with the Australia Piano Quartet (APQ), UTS’ ensemble in residence, APQ performed works by two Australian composers of Chinese heritage and Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor.

Julian’s Yu’s Piano Quartet draws on the practice of ornamentation found in traditional Chinese instrumental folk music to create a dramatic original work which uses Brahms first Symphony as inspiration.

Lisa Lim’s Amulet for solo viola is one of the most demanding works ever written for the instrument. Lim's revolutionary use of the viola evoked Chinese performance aesthetics which resulted in a unique listening experience.

Returning to the Brahmsian sound world alluded to in the Yu, the concert concluded with Brahms’ G minor Piano Quartet, a work of Hungarian gypsy inspiration and symphonic grandeur.

UTS:ACRI Deputy Director James Laurenceson and composer Lyle Chan delivered the opening remarks at the performance.
